Iron sets are usually built one of two ways. Cast irons are moulded from liquid metal into a hollow or cavity-back shape, which moves weight to the edges of the clubhead for extra forgiveness on mis-hits — good for game-improvement players. Forged irons are hammered from a single block of soft metal, giving a more solid feel and more shot-shaping control, but with less built-in forgiveness — usually preferred by lower-handicap players. Some sets, called "combo sets," mix the two: forgiving cavity-back heads in the longer irons (harder to hit well) and forged blades in the shorter irons (where control matters more).

Iron sets are usually sold by range — for example 5-9P or 6-9PAS — showing which clubs are included. A longer range (starting at 4 or 5) covers more distances but is harder to hit consistently; a shorter range starting at 6 or 7 is easier to hit but leaves gaps you'll need to fill with hybrids.
