A fairway wood is built like a smaller, more compact driver — a lower, rounder head that's easier to strike cleanly off the ground, not just off a tee. They're numbered by loft: a 3-wood (around 15°) flies the lowest and longest, a 5-wood (around 18°) launches higher and lands softer, and a 7-wood or higher gives even more height and forgiveness for tricky lies or long par-3s. Higher numbers generally mean shorter, higher, more forgiving shots — useful for golfers who struggle to get a 3-wood airborne.
