Hybrids, rescues, utility irons and driving irons are all versions of the same idea: a club that's easier to hit than a long iron but flies lower and straighter than a fairway wood. The differences come down to shape — hybrids and rescues have a rounder, wood-like head with a wide sole, giving the most forgiveness. Driving irons and utility irons look closer to a regular iron, trading some forgiveness for a flatter, more penetrating flight that holds up better in wind. Most also carry a low center of gravity, meaning the weight sits deep and low in the head, which helps get the ball airborne even from rough or a tight lie. High-MOI (Moment of Inertia) designs also resist twisting on off-centre hits, so mis-hits still fly reasonably straight.
