Kalana Ibrahim shot an even-par 72 to take the lead in the first round of the Qualifying School at Kota Seriemas GCC today, keeping himself in contention of renewing his Toyota Tour card.
The 56-year-old, who has struggled with cuts this season, posted four birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey on the 6,901-yard course. An early start allowed him to avoid the two-and-a-half-hour rain delay that disrupted play for much of the afternoon field.
Kalana is one shot ahead of amateurs Pravin Kumar and Mohd Nor Adzlie, as well as lady professional Zulaikah Nasser. A further stroke back are experienced players Brandon Lai and Syady Sheikh. The Toyota Tour is organized by Professional Golf Malaysia and managed by MST Golf.
Liyana Durisic, who recently finished third at the ASEAN Qualifier for the Maybank LPGA Championship, struggled with her putting and ended at three-over 75. “I three-putted twice and missed some easy birdie chances,” said Durisic.
Despite finishing in the rain, the 23-year-old remains hopeful about earning her Toyota Tour card and is set to compete in the LET Qualifying School in Morocco this December.
Out of 82 players who signed up for Q School, four withdrew. After today's round, 78 players finished at 25-over or better and will advance to the second round. Those who finish at 15-over or better after three rounds will earn playing rights for the Toyota Tour.
