Veteran professional Danny Chia and amateur Ng Jing Xuen clinched the Toyota Tour Yaris Cup titles at Mines Resort Golf Club with impressive seven-under-par 209 scores.
Chia, who started the final round three strokes behind, had a rough beginning with a double-bogey on the first hole. However, he swiftly recovered with birdies on holes two and three. Despite another bogey on the fourth, he closed the front nine on a strong note with four consecutive birdies.
"After the first nine, I told myself, I feel like something special is going to happen today," said the 51-year-old.
He added another birdie on the 12th hole before a two-hour rain delay interrupted play.
Chia collected his eighth birdie on the 17th and ended with a bogey on the final hole, finishing with a four-under-par 67 for a two-shot win over Afif Fathi.
"I wasn't expecting much as I wasn't hitting it well coming into the week, but I recovered well, and it's a good confidence boost for next week's senior tournament in Taiwan," Chia reflected.
Overnight leader Afif Fathi recorded a one-over-par 72 to secure solo second place.
"It was a good result nonetheless. I wish I could have finished the year off with a win," said the young professional, who will also compete in the upcoming Toyota Tour final leg.
"The game is trending in a good direction, and I'll keep pushing on to do better," he added.
Syahiran Syakir and Shahriffudin Ariffin tied for third on four-under-par 209, while Edven Ying, Daeng Rahman, and Ben Leong rounded out the top five at three-under-par 210. The best men's amateur went to Anson Yeo, who finished in tied 10th position on one-under-par.
Meanwhile, amateur Ng Jing Xuen claimed her second Toyota Tour title with a wire-to-wire victory in the Ladies Championship. Closing with an even-par 71, Jing Xuen finished four shots ahead of newly-turned professional Winnie Ng.
"I'm really happy about this win since I wasn't expecting much and wanted to just sharpen my game this week," said the 2023 SEA Games Golf Women’s gold medalist.
"I've been keeping it positive out there and taking one shot at a time, so it's rewarding to end it with a win."
Amateur Wang Xin Yao took third place with a one-over-par 214, followed by professionals Zulaikah Nasser and Amalia Shahzan in fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
The Toyota Tour, a collaboration between the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour, UMW Toyota Motor as Naming Partner, and MST Golf as Delivery Agency, will host its final event of the year—the Toyota Tour Championship—at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club from November 20-23.
